An 8th grade English teacher read the article "Sacred Cows Make the Best Hamburger" by Carol van Zalingen from Simmons Middle School in Hoover, AL. in the March 1998 issue of English Journal. The English teacher wants to know how well the writing workshop classroom that was described in the article, works with rural, below average, middle school (specifically 8th grade) students. This teacher agrees with the writing approach, but it has been her experience that students with low level abilities are unable to write successfully nor edit successfully. They don't catch their mistakes nor do they learn from their mistakes. At that point, this teacher gets so frustrated that she gives up. She also cannot imagine grading that many papers daily. This teacher wants to see the program implemented on the 8th grade school level with student who have the same level of ability as hers. Do any of you know of such a school in south Alabama?
