Okay, I did respond to the original message only - I guess I need to =
respond to the whole list. I have been given Novell, Netware training =
provided by my district - it cost almost 2000.00 and they sent 5 of us. =
3 were librarians, 2 were district trainers. I must say though that I =
felt totally overwhelmed and unprepared for the training during the =
week. It was 5 days of 9AM to 5PM. By lunch every day I felt =
"braindead". Also the bottom line with this training is they kind of =
hang you out to dry after you have the training. In other words, they =
think you can handle more than you really can. I really do not feel =
that I am a competent Novell Administrator. BTW - we were told that we =
could take the course again - the training facility allows you to retake =
for free within a year, of course you need to do this on your own time =
and if you wish to take the exam - the district says you have to pay for =
it yourself. Only one of the librarians was interested in doing this. =
It was not me.

And before you think my district is great to work for - it is not. I =
think this is a first and it was instigated by a new District =
Coordinator for Technology. =20

Training? You mean actually train treachers/TLs/LMS's to administer the
multitude of Novell, NT and Mac labs now being installed in almost every
school across North America? What a novel concept ;-)

I'd love to know how many people on this list have actually had adequate
network administration training, paid for by a school, school district =
or
regional agency. I may be wrong but I suspect the silence (lack of
positive responses) will be deafening.

It never ceases to amaze me at how little education is valued by those =
who
should be it's biggest supporters - education decision makers. As a
result, there always seems to be money for computers, printers, wiring =
or
.. but never enough for adequate inservice and training. I sometimes
think that many decision makers have (subconsciencely or otherwise) not
made the distinction between complex technology; computers, software,
networks, network operating systems, file servers, etc., and simple
(relatively speaking) technology such as; photocopiers, fax machines, =
etc.
A gadget, is a gadget, is a gadget ... .

The bottom line, Jocelyn is that you are not alone in your frustration, =
nor
is your situation unique. I wish I had some answers or solutions to =
offer.
Perhaps someone eles does.

Cheers,
