I remember sitting in a mandatory computer class at UNC and wondering "Why do I need to know this stuff? I'm going to be a school librarian." Luckily, some of it stuck and two years later when designing our network I understood what was going on when terms like "Bus" and "Star topology" and "Ethernet" came up, and I've been able to do basic network functions and to be able to follow directions from tech support and to know when to give up and call in the big dogs. No, I am not Novell certified nor do I want to be but the computer classes required of library science majors at UNC-Chapel Hill at that time gave me the grounding I needed for network training. While I grumbled at the time, I would encourage anyone interested in library media centers now to get some basic programming/network knowledge. Ya never know when it's going to come in handy. p.s.
