Since this might be of interest to others, I am replying to the group rather than the original poster. Perhaps you could identify how-to books with a spine label, like the ones that identify horse stories, mysteries, etc. You wouldn't need to give the books subject headings, which would only create a section of the catalog or OPAC that grouped together totally unrelated books anyway.
