I have also been reading this thread with great interest. In the last post I
saw, Cyndi Gates, referring to the replacement of the librarian with a non-
librarian teacher said "My "prediction" is that this library will be
able to function in the caretaking mode for about 5 years (at most) before
it completely falls apart and administration has to do something about it." I
realized that I have seen the opposite situation as well, when a librarian
without clerical inclinations has no clerical help. Again the library becomes
close to unusable after a period of time (probably the same 4 or 5 years)
because nothing is shelved correctly, the card catalog (manual or automated)
is hopelessly out of date, and the new books carefully selected by the
librarian never got ordered because the paperwork didn't get done. I have
personally seen a year's worth of new books stacked in a back room because
"there was no one to process them in". It seems that good functional
libraries need both professional librarians AND skilled clerical help.
