Guide Dog and Blindness Bibliography

I appreciate the responses of all who submitted titles. Unfortunately, I mixed
up the fiction with the non-fiction as I was compiling the hit.  I also had
trouble trying the sort alphabetically; I'm still learning.  Sorry!  But
anyway, this was a great hit.  Thank you.

Seeing in Special Ways: Children Living With Blindness

Remarkable Children: Twenty Who made History  a collective biography includes
info about Louis Braille  by Dennis Brindell Fradin

Louis Braille   a biography by Russell Friedman

Hannah  by Gloria Whelan, fiction about a blind girl set in 1897.

Carver by Ruth Yaffe Radin a contemporary story of a blind boy; he is
mainstreamed into a school but the story focuses on his desire to be a
woodcarver

Through Grandpa's Eyes  by Patricia MacLachlan

Little by Little: A Writer's Education  by Jean Little who is nearly blind,
but a very talented Canadian YA writer; she works with a guide-dog.  These are
her memoirs, written for young readers.

Mom Can't See Me  and  Mom's Best Friend - both by Sally Hobart Alexander
These are non-fiction narratives told from the viewpoint of a young girl
whose mother is blind.  The first book deals with their life together.
Fun information and well written. The second book focuses on Mom's experiences
getting a guide dog/seeing eye dog.

A Guide Dog Puppy grows up by Arnold, Caroline - A picture book approach.
Describes the career of a guide dog from its raising as a puppy, through the
training process, and placement with a blind person.

Dinah: The dog with a difference by Esta de Fossard. Milwaukee: Gareth
Stevens, c1985 ISBN 09188341458  Despite her mother's warning that people
don't   want a dog who is  different, Dinah finds her liveliness and
curiosity well suited for her new job as a seeing eye dog. It's a little
young, but a nice picture book (photos of a yellow Lab).

Woof: the Seeing Eye Dog by Danae Dobson Dallas: Word Pub., c1990
After rescuing three puppies from a burning building, Woof feels too
important to associate with his old friends, until he fills in for a seeing-
eye dog and learns the true importance that comes from serving others.

Guide dog winners  by Ruth Radlauer Chicago: Children's  Press, c1983.
Julie experiences the joys and responsibilities of raising a puppy to be
trained as a guide dog. Includes notes and glossary.

Rugby & Rosie  by Nan Parson Rossiter. New York: Dutton Children's Books,
c1997. A family and their dog help prepare a puppy for training as a guide dog
for the blind.

The Guide Dog mystery by Gertrude Chandler Warner, Toronto: Albert Whitman &

My Buddy by Audrey Olsofsky about a dog and the boy he cares for.  Touching
but never maudlin.

Love Leads the Way  a Disney movie about Buddy and Frank Morris, the first
Seeing Eye duo and recipient

A Day in the Life of...I forget the name of the publisher, but the series, "A
day in the life of... " did one about a guide dog trainer about 10 years ago.
It may be in the Follett catalog (they did carry it at the time

Follow my Leader by John Gardiner, from the 50's, but still a goodie, about a
boy who is blinded after playing with firecrackers, and then recieves a guide
dog.  Lots of info in a fiction setting.
