This has nothing to do with Mother's Day, but _A Chair for My Mother_ by Vera B. Williams is my favorite Mother/Daughter book. Although it is never stated, I would guess the family is black or hispanic. The illustrations use lots of vivid colors and the story is great. It is about a girl and her mother. There is a fire in their home and everything is destroyed. Neighbors give them lots of house hold items, but there is not a soft chair for Mom to rest in after her long day as a waitress. Mom brings home an old jar from the diner where whe works and they begin collecting spare change and tips. The money grows and grows. One day they count the money and go chair shopping. It's a nice story. I also like the Charlotte Zolotow book called (I think) A Present for Mother. But, the little girl in that book is definately white. Karen DeFrank Dorothy L.
