TARGET: Minimum amount of hardware for automation

Hi
    LM_NET has answered so many questions about automation systems, but no
where have I found anything about the minimum amount of hardware that is needed
for successful automation.  I am on a committe for my county (School-to-work)
and there is a possibility that a grant might be written at that level to help
the school libraries that are not automated in our county.
    I would like information about the minimum number of computers, size of
file servor, cost of retroconversion, etc.
