Finding a good storyteller for middle school kids is difficult. Elementary students love to sit and listen to stories, but 8th graders??? It has to be a GREAT story and an skilled storyteller to get them to settle down and listen. Thursday we had Tim Tingle, a Native American (Choctaw) storyteller from Texas, come to our library for the 7th and 8th grade students. It was magnificent. All those rowdy 8th grade boys were speechless and motionless. One of the toughest boys came up to Mr. Tingle after the performance and said "This has been the best day of my life in all the days I have been in school." I was impressed. I cross my fingers and hope a storyteller I've hired will be good. Sometimes they are not and the teachers grumble. Not so this week. I had to turn away classes from the library because we had no more room. The teachers are collaborating on inter-disciplinary projects that will incorporate Mr. Tingle's storytelling for next year. We will certainly have him back next year. Mr. Tingle lives Texas, but I believe he travels all over the US and in Europe. His address is : Tim Tingle, P.O.
