LM_NET: Library Media Networking
I sent this to Shelley (who asked the question) and then decided maybe there
would be others interested in my answer.
First of all, let me offer my help to you. Feel free to ask me whatever you
can think of. I have been a school libarian for 15 years - one year k-5,
seven years 5-8th grade, and seven k-third.
I can't answer all your questions - it would take a book. But I will start
by telling you what you need to do the VERY FIRST time you meet each class.
You need to have RULES. I have 6, printed out on separate sheets of paper.
Each is glued to a peice of red (eye-catching) construction paper and
laminated.
Here they are:
Number 1 - Walk. Don't run.
Number 2 - Sit like a Pretzel. (we used to say sit like an Indian. Not
politically correct anymore!!)
Number 3 - Use Listening Position. (Our whole building does lessons on this
- and it means hands folded in your lap, eyes on the speaker, and ears
listening to the speaker. It helps kids be focused. You may want to ask if
there a universal term for this in your new job. )
Number 4 - Remember Good Manners.
Number 5 - Keep Books Safe and Dry (I extend this by asking the children
"Safe from what?" and letting them brainstorm answers)
Number 6 - Keep Your Book in your Backpack (whenever they have one at home
- helps keep the books from getting lost!)
I review these rules once a month. It really seems to help.
