Dear Librarian,
     I appreciate it if you could answer the following questionaire
prepared by the committee responsible for  the revitalization of school
system in Fukuoka, Japan?  Its aim is to establish how students use the
school library in order to collect basic information to discuss this issue
further.  This is a strictly educational project by the association of
teachers.

Question 1 Would you tell us the number of the followings?
a) students at your school  ( 350            )
b) full-time faculty members at your school (   20           )
c) seats in the library    (    40          )
d) books in the library    (   8000           )
e) magazines in the library
                 (hard copy     25     online             )
g) ewspapers in the library
                 (hard copy     4    online             )
g) CD-ROMs in the library  (    30         )
h) computers in the library the students are allowed to use? ( 40 (20in
an attached lab           )


Question 2 How many books are taken out in one academic year?
a) by students                     (             )
b) by faculty members          (             )

Question 3 How often do the students use the library in a year during the
lesson period?  If History class and Home Economics class come to the
library to research during the same period, please count two.  Would you
give us approximate number of lessons the library is used?

Question 4 For what sujects do the teachers have their students use library
resources?  ALLL

Question 5 How do you consider the reading habit of the students, compared
with that of ten years ago?
       a)  better       b)  same         c)  worse    C, WORSE

Question 6 How do you attract students to the library?

Question 7 Are there any good ways to help students come to like reading
books?


As of Oct. 30, we received responses from 85 Japanese
high schools and from 22 US high schools.  The following
figures show the US vs Japan.

How you count the number varies from school to school.
We will analyze them well by the end of December. And
we will send the results to you by January.
