The new National Information Literacy Standards (AASL) make student research activities more important than ever before--the 4th "R." Because so many teachers are wed to textbooks and research reports are infrequent, the librarians role is minimized in the eyes of most teachers and administrators. The standards must be brought to their attention and librarians must lead the charge, through staff development, in their schools. Just recently, I made a presentation which featured "The Teacher's Guide to the Mini-Research Process" in Virginia to 35 librarians. After I introduced myself, I asked a series of questions that required a show of hands. These questions were designed so that librarians could get a quick sense of the group that came together for this 4-hour workshop. One of the questions asked them about the new information literacy standards, another asked about the ISTE Technology standards, and another asked about the Virginia Learning Standards. To my amazement, no more that 3 of them were familiar with any of these. The point is that librarians have to use these new tools to sell the importance of the library and the research process if they are to be viewed as more than catalogers and dispensers of books and magazines. Much of what I am talking about is included in the Teacher's Guide. I will send you a copy of it for your inspection and review. An older version of the new Teacher's Guide is at < www.education.elibrary.com/resources/>. The Web site is in the process of being updated in November.
