Last spring I posted our challenge of Forever by Judy Blume. This challenge was made by a parent and in order to be proactive our principal pulled the book. Well, other than that we followed our policy and procedure for a challenge that was established at district level but never finalized by our board. I am happy to announce that by majority vote our committee has opted to keep the book on the shelf for our middle schoolers today. We also had a staff challenge of The Color Purple. After much discussion it was concluded that we did not want to remove it but that it was a high level book and that we would require parental permission. My concern is without the school board's endorsement of the challenge policy how do I encourage the adoption of the policy so we have the backing of our decision??? Someone from district made the statement last week that parents have the power to make us remove books, etc and to never underestimate the power of a parent.
