This message was originally posted on 10/30 but rejected by the list because I inadvertly left out my e-mail address. So here is the whole shabang: Hildegard N. Pleva BA,MS,MLS, MA Library Media Specialist Linden AVenue Middle School, Red Hook, New York hpleva@aol.com In the heart of the beautiful Hudson River Valley!!!!!!!!!! For the last four years I have run toe programs involving teachers as readers of middle level literature. Both programs WORK. The first is a Parents and Teachers as Readers Book Discussion Group. I pick about six award-winning titles from our book fair in the fall and order multiple paperback copies. Parents, teachers, support staff, administrator and folk from the community are invited to join. Send publicity to elementary school, public library and newspaper. We meet once a month after school to discuss the books. We talk about the lements of the novel, possible integration with the curriculum, age appropriateness. We conclude by mentioning some of the other things we are reading and recommend. About 10 to 12 people sign up for this. Those who come regularly and some who participate on a correspondence basis love it. When we have finished with the books they are added to our paperback collection. One teacher has made use of these multiple copy sets for book reports in her classroom. The second program is called Reading Partners. At the end of the year I invite teachers, support staff and administrators to read books from a selection that I have put together. There are usually 25 to 30 titles. I have an annotated list available for them. They take the books home for the summer, read them, and return in Sept. This selection of books is them made available to students. The students can also read the annotated list to which has been added the names of the adults who read them. Students read these books and gain extra credit from their English teachers if they discuss them with the adult who read the book. This program is a great success. Our 8th grade English teacher is an avid reader and sends his students to the library regularly to check out these books. My best adult customers are a home economics teacher and a math teacher. Hope this gives you some ideas. Post privately with questions. Hildegard N.
