This message was originally posted on 10/30 but rejected by the list because I inadvertly left out my e-mail address. So here is the whole shabang: Hildegard N. Pleva BA,MS,MLS, MA Library Media Specialist Linden Avenue Middle School, Red Hook, New York hpleva@aol.com In the heart of the beautiful Hudson River Valley!!!!!!!!!! ----------------- For the last couple of years I have allowed students to play chess on Fridays in the library. I also play classical music in the library on Fridays. We do have a chess club which meets after school so a number of students are interested in the game. In our middle school (gr. 6-8) most students have one studyhall a day out of nine periods. We have so many periods because they are much shorter than I would like them (39 minutes). But that is a whole other issue. Some students have two studyhalls a day. Which also seems a shame to me. Some students have none because they are in band and/or chorus. This year I am planning to impliment something new called a "Books to DO With Table". I have, with the approval of my principal, purchsed how-to or manipulative-type books and materials to lure non-readers to the library. I have origami materials, pop-out and sticker books connected to the curriculum, optical illusion books with manipulatives, and two tesselations puzzle sets from MindWare. Of course, I am worried about parts and pieces disappearing but what the heck. I want to see how it works. Someone wrote about clear expectations regarding behavior while using "special" materials in the library. In other words, the same standards of behavior apply regardless of the materials being used. By the way, I also have couch in the library that the kids love. Sometimes there are problems but most of the time its fine. Plants and couches make libraries look very inviting. ost of the time students are doing homework or resarch, reading books or magazines. We are not well stocked with computers. There is a lab elsewhere. Hildegard N.
