Dear LM_NETTERS, The 6th grade science classes at my K-6 building are participating in the National Newspaper Week Chemistry Quiz. This consists of 15 questions centered around the theme of chemistry professions. We are a small school with Internet connections and a small reference collection. We do have Occupational Outlook Handbook thanks to our guidance counselor but it is not technical enough. Here is 1 of the 3 questions for today: "The products I develop help relieve sticky situations, reduce friction and generally keep the world of industry running smoothly. Machines can work without my products, but not for long. We used to use animal products in the early days, but most of our amterials now come from petroleum and silicone compounds. My chemistry is part of a field known as tribology. What kind of chemist am I?" The students came up with the answer tribologist using the internet but I doubt that that is the answer since the word tribology is used in the question. I have searched using Hotbot, Dogpile and AskJeeves and the keywords chemists, career and education but am finding sites too general or else they are job postings. Does anyone have suggestions for an internet site or reference book common to public or high school libraries? By the way students are allowed to ask any adult other than their science teacher for the answer so I can do the work while they watch. I'd love to impress this teacher and already have with some of the preliminary work I did. TIA for any help Nadena Kramer, librarian Second District Elementary School Meadville, PA 16335 kramer@toolcity.net =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
