Osaka Int'l School
Japan
Grade teacher on assignment in the library

The Senri International School Foundation
announces the opening of a search for:

The Head Librarian for Osaka International School and Osaka Intercultural
Academy
Position has been filled by an elementary teacher on special assignment for
1998/99, so position is being sought for August 1, 1999.

The Head Librarian ...
* will work with a Japanese school librarian and a staff of part-time
assistants;
* will be in charge of an innovative library that houses a bilingual
collection with an equal number of English and Japanese titles;
* should have an advanced degree in library science from an institution
with ALA accreditation or its non-American equivalent;
* should be familiar and comfortable with advanced technological tools, as
the library is a center for our technology program and computer network;
* will be a member of the technology team and most likely offer direct
technology support in English, and/or Japanese depending on need, language
ability, and technological experience;
* ideally be bilingual in English and Japanese, though Japanese is not a
requirement;
* able to manage a complex library in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual
environment;
* be an enlightened teacher and leader of children of all ages and adults
of all ages, especially for elementary school classes which depend on the
librarian for direct teaching of literature and library skills.
The Senri International School Foundation operates two innovative schools
in a beautiful campus built in 1991 with contributions from major Japanese
companies in the Kansai area. Osaka International School is a preK-12
school for the international residents of the Kansai and currently has a
student body of slightly less than 250 students. Osaka Intercultural
Academy (Senri Kokusai Gakuen) has about 370 students, grades 7-12, and is
designed to meet the needs of Japanese and international Japanese-speaking
students returning from abroad as well as local children. The two schools
are making changes in their programs and administrations to eventually be
seen as a single secondary school with two rigorous programs, one in
English culminating in the IB curriculum and diploma, the other in Japanese
accredited by the Ministry of Education, both supported by an innovative
English-language elementary school with a strong Japanese language program.
Currently the secondary schools are joined together in the art, music, and
PE programs, where students are scheduled in shared classes and taught
primarily in English, and most importantly in our library which is a single
center serving the two student bodies and parent communities. Qualified
students from both schools may also take English courses in OIS (even to
the IB level) or Japanese (kokugo) classes in OIA. Our technology program
is administered by a joint school team which operates a unique bilingual
high-speed network installed in the summer of 1997, and whose center now
resides on the library's second floor mezzanine. The goal is to integrate
technology into the various programs of the school as much as possible.
Interested candidates should submit a letter of introduction and a resume
to:
