Thanks to everyone who responded to my query about intruder drills. It looks like most of us have some sort of special announcement or signal at which children and teachers are locked in classrooms. We keep students out of site and inaccessible. It seems we as a group have had some experience with intruders in our schools. We are by no means immune, so many say better safe than sorry. Some did not give specific details, understandably citing lack of confidentiality on a public list. Some interesting ideas: Rekey classroom doors so a teacher's key would fit all doors and teachers could get kids into the nearest room. Leave only one outside door unlocked and monitor it. Put blinds or curtains up over big library windows/doors. Keep all classroom doors locked. Libraries often have unlisted phone lines which can be used and not tied up by the media., Intruder drills are listed in "critical incident plans" in some schools and police departments. Meet with the nearest classroom teacher and arrange for them not to lock up until you and your potential kids get there, too. -- Jackie Keith, Librarian jkeith@pen.k12.va.us Battlefield Middle School 11120 Leavells Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407 Battlefield's Home Page: http://www.spotsylvania.k12.va.us/middle/battlem/index.htm =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
