Subject: GEN: Teaching summary writing
While the AARP may have sent this around (again), all of it has been
around the Net for quite a few years. Most of it is Urban Legend and
some of it is pure myth. For example, German was never considered by
a US Congress as the official language of the United States. As
every US citizen should know, the USA doesn't *have* and official
language.

However, this would make a nice project for an advanced history
class: prove or disprove each item.. with references. (and no fair
asking the librarian for help)

Writing a summary is something teachers ask students to do all the time. In
high school, we assume that the students already know how to do this, that
they've been taught in elementary school (or middle school, or that they
intrinsically should know how to do this). Having been in a high school
for 13+ years now, I can say that many, many h.s. students do not know how
to write a summary.

However, in my many years of teaching (before becoming a librarian), I
never came up with a "foolproof" method of teaching students how to do
this. Obviously, neither have some of the teachers in my school.

One of them has asked me to do a "how to write a summary" lesson with the
students.

Any suggestions? It doesn't even have to be "foolproof"!
