Subject: HIT: High School E-Mail Policies Part 4 (second try)
From: Joanne Shawhan <shawhanj@CRISNY.ORG>

No E-Mail Permitted Con't
We do not allow "recreational" anything.E-Mail Policies con't
I do not allow students to do any personal e-mail. They MAY use it for
college info or for school projects. Also, a few years ago, staff were
tying up the computers for personal e-mail and I had to stop that as
well. Most people understand the rule.

We do not allow students to send email at our high school.

E-Mail Permitted with Restrictions—13 Respondents
We have limited it to nine of our 40 computers. I don't like it at all,
since it borders on gaming (which we don't allow at all), and some of it

is potentially problematic due to inappropriate contact with outsiders
(e.g., cyber predators).

I only allow recreational email in the library AFTER normal school hours

- and students have to be finished when I leave - usually at 4:00 p.m.
I tried letting students do email during school hours and they tied up
the computers for students and teachers having legitimate research or
word processing projects. The same policy is enforced in the computer
labs - personal email only during non-school hours.

Until this school year I allowed unlimited e-mail but this year I
decided to only allow one computer to be used for E-mail with a limit of

fifteen minutes. All other Internet computers are labeled with NOT TO
BE USED FOR E-MAIL. I find students who are really using e-mail have
it already at home anyway. I emphasize the media Center's computers are

used for informational retrieval only. So far it seems to be working
but I have had a few problems.

We allow students to e-mail "off"campus to friends and relatives. We
don't have a huge percentage of students with home computers.

At this point I have 6 computers in the library hooked up to internet.
We allow the students to use the email if they have one from yahoo or
hotmail, etc. I do not allow them to use my email program to send or
receive unless it is a school project. We have 684 students in grades
7-12. At this point, I have only had the computers available about 1
month and had only 1connection last year. I give school assignments
priorty over answering email. So far I have not had any trouble with
this policy. It is written in our internet policy that students can
email and does list specific purposes. We do list the unaccetpable uses

and they must sign the form as well as their parents.

really had a problem with it! We have 19 computers and I am
sure we not have nearly enough if we permitted email and chat rooms.
