I have just finished unpacking and setting up 16 Gateways in our media
center. They will be networked to a server and printer. Due to a lack of
facilities, we do not have an "open" lab in our school. The one lab we
have for keybording has Apple IIe's. I know the problems I will
encounter - but I wanted our school to have an open lab and I was
willing to run it.

I will meet with the media committe on Moday to recommend some policies
and procedures for the use of the media center lab by students and
teachers. I envision teachers bringing in entire classes to do research
with Encarta, Infotrac and within a few months (as soon as we find
$2500.) internet activities and research. We also have Microsoft Works
which will enable them to compose projects and papers in the lab.

I 'd like to hear from any of you who have labs in the library and what
your polices are regarding student use. What are the problems that I
will face? How do you regulate it's use? How far in advance do teachers
need to sign up - or do they sign up in advance. Do you allow individual
students to come in at will, after school? What kinds of activities in
your labs have been the most successful - what particular programs?

I'd like to be able to talk intelligently at this first meeting and be
ready with answers. Thanks for any helpful advice.
