At my school everyone from grades 1-5 gets 2 books at a time- one must be a reading book on their level- now that we've gone to AR it is usually an AR book in their range and the other can be whatever they please- something to hard, to easy, a joke book, a drawing book, an animal book- more or less whatever strikes their fancy. I call it "meat and popcorn". The only exception is our Goosebumps collection. I bought them to wean our 5th graders off of Clifford the Big Red Dog and found out that every first grader wanted one- so they could carry it around and feel "cool"- which meant I had none for the 5th graders! So, anyone below 4th grade is welcome to check one out, but they have to pass the AR test on it before they can have another. Once they pass the test they get a special "Goosebumps" sticker on their library card. It's become quite a rite of passage. It gives the kids free choice but also assures their teachers that each child has something suitable for DEAR time. Of course, they can return their books and get others whenever they want too also.
