My 2 yen on the book check out/limits situation. I generally don't limit my students to a particular area/type of book .....I find that there are some out there who will always want to read an easy book, and why not? I certainly VEG when it comes to summer reading--I'm not reading anything challenging while I'm out vacationing! (New Childrens Lit, yes, but it wouldn't be classified as "challenging" for me) It's nice now and then to just read an easy book for enjoyment purposes only.....now and then I do encourage them to try something harder--usually if I do a book talk, that sells the books/series. And you're right, there are some kids (like my students in kg) who love to carry out a big book--and who's to say their big brother/sister/mom/dad/uncle/etc isn't reading it to them at home? I'm not a limits person at all......mainly because my librarian in 3rd grade insisted I couldn't POSSIBLY have finished 3 Nancy Drew books in 3 days. Little did she know that I LOVED to read .......she came around eventually and believed me......thank heavens. I'd hate to think how she and others might warp young and avid readers.......Of course, the parent problem is an entirely different issue......I have NO suggestions on that! Enough......off the soapbox and onto work!
