ate: Fri, 27 Nov 1998 19:30:58 -0500 No Recreational Use con't We require that students stop in the library before lunch and get a pass to be in the library during lunch. We also insist most times that they go to lunch first and then come down to the library presenting their pass to the lunch monitors. We also insist on studying quietly. No eating either. THe first year I worked I thought it would be okay to be more casual about the whole students in the library during lunch. I found I was becoming a cafeteria aide in addition to my other work; I had no lunch time break from the normal school day ( ie: lunch was like the rest of the school periods: BUSY AND DEMANDING AND NOISY) I found sanity more important than being constantly on call for service and babysitting. Laura Maroon Media Specialist and Librarian Moultonborough Academy Moultonborugh, NH 03254 lmaroon@moultonborough.k12.nh.us We have split lunches and that means that there is almost always a class in the media center during lunchtime. We aren't bashful. If students come in and aren't productively working, we ask them to leave and tell them that they are welcome back when they really need us and our resources. Usually not a problem. We were having the same problem a few years ago. Students were using the Media Center as a lounge. We stopped this by not allowing anyone to come to the Media Center from lunch without a research pass. These research passes can not be written by a person on lunch duty, unless I see the pass before that duty begins. When the student comes, it must be for research, recreational reading is not an option from lunch. The administration is VERY supportive of this position. Clete Schirra cschirra@lcn.net South Park High School 412.655.0613 voice 2178 Ridge Rd. 412.655.1463 fax Library, PA 15129 I treat the lunch periods as any other period, especially since I often have classes. Students must have a pass to leave lunch to come to the media center. I don't care who the pass is from, but some teacher must take the time to write it. Margaret Shaffer Easton High School Library Media Specialist 723 Mecklenburg Ave 410-822-4180x118 Easton MD 21601 410-819-5814 (fax) We are on a block schedule, with half the students in lunch and half in seminar. I have 20-40 students/day during that time. I've asked the seminar teachers to limit it to 3 students per classroom, but some don't keep track very well. All students know that coming to the library is a privilege, not a right. Those who abuse the privilege are sent back to class. So far I haven't had any real problems. David Lininger, LMS Hickory County R-1 Schools Urbana, MO 65767 tss003@mail.connect.more.net I require passes which they must get *in advance* from me. Then, I can refuse passes to those who have not been using the library constructively in the past. This works well for me. Cheri Quillin, Librarian Lamar High School Lamar, MO 64759 cquillin@lamar.k12.mo.us Basically, my policy is that students are not allowed to come to the media center at any time during the school day unless they have a pass from their teacher. We have four lunch periods during our fifth hour period. My library has seating for two classes (fifty-six chairs total) and one class in an attached twenty-four screen computer lab. Since over 150 students eat during each lunch, it's not out of the question for a dozen students to choose to spend time in the media center, which would then distract, cramp, and generally disrupt those classes (or potential classes) that are in the media center fifth hour. It's too difficult to say students can come in without a pass IF classes aren't scheduled in, so the policy is for them to always have a pass. I don't mind. it gets them used to going to the library, makes the library an inviting place. I have some rules (of course); Horseplay goes outside. They have to clean up when they leave (which they mostly do). On computers, someone doing school work has priority over someone just "hanging out". It all works just fine. Some of my teachers don't like it as they think it is too busy and noisy, but I like it. Other teachers think it is great that the kids come. Debbie ---------- Well, I don' t mind kids hanging out during lunch or before or after school -- as long as they can abide by the library rules of no food or drink and keeping their conversations quiet. I want this to be an inviting place for students. If there is a class here during lunch, I will give them preference for use of our limited number of computers. And I will ask students to leave if they're too loud or otherwise disruptive.
