Good morning LM_NET!

I knew you'd come through for me! Thanks to all who responded to my
question re OCR software. Here are the results.

We had simple OCR software from Caere pre-installed on our scanners when
we bought them several years ago. It was really useless so we upgraded
last year and the Caere was rated by many people to be the best choice.
(To upgrade saves most of the cost of buying a new brand of OCR.) I use
it occasionally, and a few teachers do too, but it is very limited.
Accuracy is still poor--from clear, new simple font computer copy you
will still get back material with an error on every third line. If the
text isn't new, the font is fancy, etc. it's impossible to use the ocr
successfully.

I recommend Caere OmniPage Pro. They are at:

                                ****

Check out the full Adobe Acrobat suite (not just the Reader) -- it has
better OCR (optical character reader) software than others I've used. If
you scan and then open in Photoshop you will NOT be able to edit the
results. And I don't think Word will work at all unless your scanner
will
let you save in Word format.

TextBridge seems to be what you are looking for:
http://www.zdnet.com/adverts/eprints/scansoft/pcmg/80113dh.html has a
review and
here's the home page http://www.xerox.com/scansoft/textbridge/. Doesn't
seem to be too expensive. Lets you scan in documents and then edit them
or
use them as online forms.

                                ****

I recommend TextBridge Pro. Will convert text to a Word document.

                                ****

You will need something like Text Page Pro, by Xerox, or Carie's Omni
Page.
These are OCR software packages. Both are good.

                                ****

I have found that OmniPage (Lite or Pro) works the best...

                                ****

Debbie, you should have received a piece of bundled software with your
Umax
called Presto! Page Manager that will do OCR for you. George. (Note:
We didn't)

                                ****

We are using OmniPage Pro. That's a fairly decent piece of software, if
you
don't have a lot of formatting. There is also OmniForm that supposedly
can
scan forms so that they will open as fillable templates. Also, you are
supposed to be able to save them as Word or WordPerfect files. I find
that
it works best when filled in OmniForm and you don't try to export them
...
both are from Caere software. You should be able to find info about them
at
http://www.caere.com ... Nothing is perfect. OCR has a long way to go.

                                ****

Withour new
HP ScanJet 6100C
our computer tech
wanted:
(new) OmniPage Pro 8.0
(World's Best Selling OCR)
costs $350., I believe.

It arrived when another computer tech was here
and he said it wasn't necessary with that Scanner
but our computer tech and one of our computer teachers
said it was and wanted it,
so I'm (in my comuter/tech ignorance) glad we bought it.

                                ****

We just bought Omnipage Pro 8.0, which fits all your criteria. I
haven't tried it yet, but it came highly recommended from our tech.
Hope this helps.
