I am sorry to be so late in getting this hit posted.  I have been busy =
with
a technology conference that we (librarians organization) cohosted with
ASCD and PDK.

Judging by responses, lots of people are in need of good interesting but
secondary level biographies.

You might take a look at my Database of Award-Winning literature

I did a search for biography chapter books of age 12 and up and found
the following.  They are all award winners of one kind or another, so you
don't have to
worry about quality.  I have sorted the list by year of publication.

Author: Giblin, James Cross
Title: Charles A. Lindbergh: The Human Hero (1997)
ALAN 1998  A biography of the pilot whose life was full of controversy and
tragedy, but also fulfilling achievements.

Author: Wassiljewa, Tatjana        Translated by: Trenter, Anna
Title: Hostage to War: A True Story (1997) MLBH 1998

The author relates her experiences from 1941-1953 as she
struggles to survive as a Russian teenager caught up in all the horrors
of World War II and its aftermath.

Author: Kehret, Peg
Title: Small Steps: The Year I got Polio (1996) ALAN 1997

The author describes her battle against polio when she was
twelve and thirteen and her efforts to overcome its debilitating
effects.

Author: Fleischman, Sid Title: Abracadabra Kid: A Writer's Life (1996)

The autobiography of the Newbery award-winning children's
author, Sid Fleischman, who set out from childhood to be amagician.

Author: Bober, Natalie S.
Title: Abigail Adams: Witness to a Revolution (1995) BGHBA 1995
 A biography of president's wife Abigail Adams (1744-1818).

Author: Sills, Leslie
Title: Visions: Stories About Women Artists (1993) ALAN 1994
Presents the lives and works of four pioneering women artists:
Mary Cassatt, Leonora Carrington, Betye Saar, and Mary Frank.

Author: Myers, Walter Dean

A biography of radical Muslim civil rights leader Malcolm X (1925-1965).

The author-illustrator, Ted Lewin, describes his early days supporting
himself as a professional wrestler while learning to be an
illustrator.

I was looking at the1998-99 K-12 Franklin Watts catalog which contains
"Impact biographies" in their secondary biography section (p.85). You can
call for one at 1-800-621-1115 if you don't have that particular catalog.
These look fairly good but are 18.00 each which I think is a little stiff.

One of my favorites is "Woman in the mists: the story of Dian Fossey and
the
mountain gorillas of Africa" by Farley Mowat.
