The McCallie School, an independent school for boys in grades 6-12, has an
opening for Middle School Library Media Specialist. This is a new position,
in a new middle school facility due to open in Fall, 1999.

The successful candidate must hold a minimum of a master of arts degree in
library science (preferably with a concentration in library media) from an
ALA-accredited program.  He/she must have extensive experience working with
automated library systems (preferably Dynix Scholar) and other
instructional technology.  Some experience working with young adolescents
is also a necessity.  Experience in a middle school library media program
is preferred, and experience in organizing a new library would be helpful.

The holder of this position will have the following responsibilities:
=A7 Designing and implementing library media program for the new middle=
 school
=A7 Developing a curriculum for the teaching of library/information skills t=
o
grades 6-8
=A7 Working with middle school faculty in the use of the Library Media Cente=
r
(including integrated units and scheduling) and regularly communicating
with principal, faculty, and students
=A7 Collection development (books, media, software, and periodicals) -
including acquisition of new material; repairs of older material;
monitoring collection for worn, obsolete or stereotyped material
=A7 Day-to-day operations of the Library Media Center (reference, checking
books out, overdues, shelving, magazines, read-alouds)
=A7 Budgeting
=A7 Developing and overseeing parent volunteer program and program for
student aides
=A7 Participating in appropriate administrative meetings
=A7 Remaining current in profession through associations, meetings, reading,
and other professional development activities
=A7 Coordinating with upper school library staff in maximizing use of
available resources
=A7 Providing faculty with professional literature relevant to curriculum an=
d
development issues
=A7 Assisting faculty with development of web pages and other implementation
of instructional technology
