I have been assigned to a COE (Creating Opportunities for Excellence) committee on Improving Reading for high school students. I think the targeted skill here is not to get them to read more but to get them to read better (although for many there is a definite correlation between the two.) I have been reading the posts concerning AR and EBS programs with interest - our school has neither of these, although two years ago, I tried to implement the EBS program; I was unable to get the English department to consider these even though our elementary and middle schools have it and love it. Have your schools had any success in improving the reading skills of your high school students? If so, HELP! Are there any professional journals which I could consult? Thanks in advance! Judy P.S. Nearly 30% of our student population is Hispanic, but I don't think that really figured into the reason this was a targeted skill. We have an ESL class in effect already ...
