Hello Everyone,

I need some help. I had a young lady come in and ask me if I had the
book
Fly Girl by Omar Tyree. For those of you who are not familiar, Mr. Tyree
is an African American author. I told the young lady no that I did not
have that title because it had not been approved by the Review &
Evaluation Committee. By the way, I tried to read this title but found
it very boring; I guess a teenager would enjoy it more than I. I tried
to interest her in other titles by African American authors to no avail;
forgive me I can not recall the names at this moment. Well, you guessed
it, this was not what she wanted. This brings me to my dilemma. My
school is in Mitchellville area of Prince George's County, MD. As some
of you may have read/heard, this is the most affluential African
American community in the United States. The student body is give or
take 98% African American. The fiction titles that are in the collection
are of no interest to these students. I have seen some of them reading
the likes of Terry McMillan, Bebe Moore Campbell, etc. I would love to
update the fiction collection, but the young adult novels are not of
interest to my students and the safe ones would become shelf sitters. I
have read Terry McMillan's and Bebe Moore Campbell's work, but because
of the nature of their work I am afraid to approve. What should I do, I
am tempted to just order what I think they would read and deal with the
consequences as they arrive. In all honesty, I can not see were these
books will do anymore harm than what they see in the movies, on
television, etc.

I hope someone out there can assist me.

TIA

Michelle
