From: Sue Esterman@SCOTS COLLEGE on 10/23/98 09:25 AM We are a small, traditional, boys school, and we introduced SSR at years 9 and 10 this year. It has been a great success We sent home an outline of what it was and what it \'s intended for , to all parents. There has not been one single adverse comment from parents. The boys find it - on the whole - good, and most of the teachers involved are also finding it good. We have it at the start of the afternoon (following a lengthy and boisterous lunch break) and I would like to see it extended up the school over the next two or three years. Our timetabling does mean that some classes are scheduled at the same time and thus "miss" 20 minutes of their 50 minute period more than once, but so far they have not found that it impedes the rest of their teaching, rather the reverse. It is early days for us - only two terms worth of SSR - but it does seem to be worth the effort. The library and the English department combined to produce a "recommended reading" list which is wide-ranging, and which is mostly available in the library here. The only stipulation we put on it is that the boys must read fiction or biography. Hope this is useful Good luck Sue Esterman Information Centre Director Scots College Wellington, NZ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are copyright To quit LM_NET (or set-reset NOMAIL or DIGEST), Send email to listserv@listserv.syr.edu In the message write EITHER: 1) SIGNOFF LM_NET 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL or 3) SET LM_NET DIGEST 3) SET LM_NET MAIL * Please allow for confirmation from Listserv For LM_NET Help & Archives see: http://ericir.syr.edu/lm_net/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=
