I just completed a presentation with 8 minutes of cliparts I've collected for a number of years on the "World of Books" that, unfortunately, I couldn't use with my workshop in Addis. Clipart and fonts are fun things to gather as a resource, though there is so much it's easy to be overwhelmed. Some of the best sites are: http://www.ncrtec.org/picture.htm">Amazing Picture Machine http://www.artsearch.net/artsearch/">Art Search http://www.arttoday.com/">ArtToday.gif (If you want an EXCELLENT site, but this costs something like $20 per year to use) http://www.barrysclipart.com/">Barry's Clip Art Server http://www.clipartconnection.com/">ClipArt Connection http://isurf.interpix.com/">Excalibur Image Surfer http://www.hotbot.com/">Hot Bot's Image Search http://www.lycos.com/lycosmedia.html">Lycos Pictures and Sounds Searcher http://www.webplaces.com/search/">Web Places 4-engine Clip Art Searcher http://www.ctr.columbia.edu/webseek/">WebSeek Image and Video Search (Columbia University) Another wonderful source is the alt.binaries.clip-art newsgroup. You must, however, have access through your server to the Newsgroups, although there are commercial re-servers that do work (though they also include the newsgroups you WONT want in your library) Finally, if you don't have easy web access, then there are many, many cd-roms available in the computer stores and in computer magazine inserts that are fairly cheap to purchase. Realize, though, that clipart comes in various formats. The opening picture on your computer probably is a .bmp (BitMap), with others as .pcx, .jpg, .gif, .jpeg, .tif only some of them. Unfortunately, not all programs will use all formats and so you need a translator. Paint Shop Pro, available to download online and many other places for a free trial, is the one I use. You open the picture file and then, if required, simply save it as another format. This program is also wonderful to clip parts out you don't want, edit, change, etc. There are, however, many other such programs. What we do is to gather the ones Linda and I think the children and teachers will use and sort them out into topics, use Paint Shop Pro to Browse each file and the print the thumbnails (miniatures of the image) off onto pages in a binder. The down side is, of course, that you will never have enough and there will always be the teacher who wants a picture of a French dog talking to a German cat.... in color... with sound.... within two minutes...... Hope this helps Earl At 09:23 AM 10/23/98 -0400, Jane Hyde wrote: >All librarians should be on Dover Books' mailing list.
