With all the talk of standards and of testing discrete skills, I found that I needed a dip in the research to restore my faith in reading as the way to learn to read. I personally was a born reader--I just started to read. I do remember memorizing the difference between want, went, what, and when in third grade, because I was tired of getting them confused, but not because I suddenly understood their morphological structure. (By the way, my mother, a child of the Depression, always read to us and our home was filled with books.) So, I took a short trip south to hear Dr. Stephen Krashen. Remember him, the guy who wrote the research that you had to memorize to pass thetest for the Language Development Specialist Credential? Well, he is one of the few (that I am aware of) academics who continues to say that reading is the the way to learn to read, and that the research proves it! He encouraged the teachers and administrators at the session I attended to join the Reading Association AND the School Library Association, so they could keep up-to-date with the real world or reading research. He stated that he is one of the few non-library members of the California School Library Association. He pointed out that it is in those teachers own personal self interest to express support of the school library and the school library staff. He even pointed out three ways to get more money for books and for library staff. I you can attend only one off campus professional growth experience, try to see Dr. Krashen. He will make you fell great--and he tells a pretty good joke, too.
