Dear LM_Net members:

There were many requests for a HIT, but only two suggestions for Professional
Reading: "Hot
Picks" for 1998. Also only one person responded with a review source for Prof.
reading - School
Library Journal. I personally prefer Booklist which also has a search engine to
find online
book reviews at http://www.ala.org/booklist/007.html#ALL

Educational Leadership also reviews prof. books in every issue.

Teachers Magazine http://www.edweek.org/tm/ has book reviews online accessed by
clicking the
books link. Reviewed in this month's issue:

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CLASSROOM . . . and Other Essays,
by Alfie Kohn. Oct. 1998 (Jossey-Bass, $25.)

THE REAL EBONICS DEBATE: Power, Language, and the Education of African American
Children, edited
by Theresa Perry and Lisa Delpit. May 1998 (Beacon Press, $12.)

FINANCING SCHOOLS FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE: Strategies for Improving the Use of
Educational
Resources, by Allan Odden and Carolyn Busch March 1998 (Jossey-Bass, $31.95.)

Teacher Magazine is part of the Education Week on the Web site
http://www.edweek.org/ -- very
worthwhile. Full text articles.

I am considering ordering the following three 1998 prof. books:

Paradise Lost : California's Experience, America's Future

List Price: $25.00
Hardcover - 344 pages (April 1998)
New Press; ISBN: 1565843576

Here are the four responses I received:

I am reading _The Transparent Society: Will Technology Force Us to
Choose Between Privacy and Freedom_, by David Brin, and as suggested by another
LM_NET member.
With few exceptions, Brin's analysis is VERY well considered, as he contemplates
how we may
learn to practically and respectfully live together as a society, with technology
compelling us
to accept (perhaps belatedly) that we will each need to learn to hold ourselves
reasonably
accountable, if simply because others will have the means to do so, otherwise!
(Somewhat
mirroring the notion of M.A.D.--Mutually Assured Destruction--the fact that we will
all have the
ability to watchdog one another may serve to keep us in check from abusing this
potential. But
there's MUCH more to Brin's work than my simple synopsis, here, and many issues
raised directly
touch on issues of concern for library professionals.)

I just received Power Tools by Joyce Valenza, published by ALA. It
is $40.00 and includes a guide and 117 loose-leaf forms, reproducible
and ready-to-use. It includes forms for Public Relations, Day-to-Day
Stuff, Information Skills, Graphic Organizers, and forms for Internet
related activities. As a K-6 librarian, I feel it is better suited for high school
librarians
and students. Power Tools includes such things as teacher and student surveys, MLA
Style guides
for traditional and electronic sources, the Colorado Information Literacy
Guidelines, AUP
organizer, etc. Power point transparencies are included. A CD is is also included
for use on
Mac or Windows so that forms can be personalized for your local setting.

The title I am anxious to add to our professional collection (and to
encourage our staff members to read) is

A Tribe Apart by Patricia Hersch

WOW!! Those of us who work with middle and high school students can see *what*
they do but we
often can't understand *why* they do what they do. This book really opened my eyes
to the
working of teens and preteens!! In it I saw my students, my own children, myself,
and my
colleagues. 'Should be on everyone's reading list!
-------------------------------------
I use the reviews in School Library Journal for professional materials. I see
reviews in several
other professional magazines (Creative Classroom, Teaching PreK-8, etc.), but I
think I'm
prejudiced towards those from librarians.

I am still interested in comments on theses titles and other suggestions.
