Dear LM_Netters,

I have a simple suggestion for initiating contact with future
teachers and at the same time raising their awareness of how the
library/media center can be a valuable resource for them and their
students. Here is what I did to try and educate the students that
were being sent into our building as future teachers. This summer
I wrote up what I call our Taft Library/Media Center Student
Teacher Information Sheet. I contacted the local university's
student teacher coordinator and shared that I had made the sheet. I
asked her if she would distribute copies before sending her students to
our school. She has done just that!

The Taft Library/Media Center Student Teacher Information Sheet
begins with a welcoming message. Then, it lists our resources (print,
nonprint, equipment, technology, software, etc.) The next section lists

services that I provide, emphasizing my cooperative, integrated
instructional role in our school. Information is also given on how to
schedule library use and my services. Finally, our use policy is
outlined. That way they know about passes and other day to day details.

This fall I have had the heaviest student teacher use ever. I
have student teachers using the library virtually on a daily basis for
the first time ever. One student even e-mailed me at home. :) We
scheduled a time and sat down and designed a project together that we
will cooperatively teach.

I am very happy with the results of my information sheet!
