I would welcome info on tried and tested events and activities to promote reading and enhance the library's image in the middle school. I have voluntarily transferred from one middle school (grades 6-8) to another, and would like to be more proactive and innovative in my new position. In my last school, I responded to teachers' needs, but didn't initiate any events. Someone recently referred to an annual "reading extravaganza" but I emptied my trash before I thought of asking for details. Also, when would students participate in such events - in class groups, before or after school, etc. In my experience, teachers are loth to bring students except when they have a classroom-related need - there is so much pressure to get through the curriculum. I will be happy to post a HIT collection of replies. Joan Campbell Librarian H.B.
