I have often toyed with the idea of creating a local edition of the ALA READ
posters but
wondered if it didn't violate copyright so I asked. Below is a copy of my original
message sent to the ALA Graphics Department and the reply I received from Barbara
Carney (reposted with her permission). Remember...don't shoot the messenger
(me!)...

Good morning-
I hope you can answer the following questions for me (or perhaps forward them to
someone
who can):

Would ALA permit librarians/media specialists to create and use in their own
facility:
        1) READ posters fashioned after those of ALA but with local subjects?
        2) Their own window flag with the ALA symbol (stylized reader, blue/white)?

Thank you for your prompt response.

Dear Ms. Lantz,
You are free to create your own National Library Symbol flag; ALA
Graphics discontinued the product about a year ago. The blue and white
library symbol is in the public domain. The blue color is PMS #285. A black
and white camera-ready clipart sheet may be requested free of charge
from the ALA Public Information Office: www.pio@ala.org

The ALA Celebrity READ poster style is not available for local use,
although I can certainly appreciate your interest. It is important that we
can assure the celebrities that the use of the poster style is limited to just
those we publish.

Please feel free to contact with any other concerns regarding ALA
Graphics' products.

Cordially,

Barbara Carney
