A. Storage of gym/tote bags while student in library
B. Librarians locker or locked storage space for coat, purse, etc.
C. Food/gum/candy/drinks
D. Special situations in cataloging/processing/storing materials

1. Separation of paperback collection
2. Biography designation (B, 920, 92, 921, surnames)
3. Profession collection
4. Storage of periodicals
5. CD storage

E. Location of coin box, specifically for making change
F. Write a Mini-History of the school and the library
G. If librarian is leaving the school permanently:

1. Clean out drawers, cabinets, shelves of all personal items
2. Discard material that you know you should have thrown away years ago, but
were procrastinating until the “light” told you when to do it.
3. Remove  or store in secured place, all cash and coins that have been stored
for “paid” lost books, copier, fines
4. List software (shareware) that has been paid for (provide documentation)
5. Clean off computer hard drives of
a. Personally owned software
b. Shareware never paid for
c. Person files
d. Professional files that are of no interest to the new librarian
6. Positively prepare staff for the transition
7. List the unfinished projects you wanted to finish
8. List the projects you never got around to do
9. Explain why certain items are secured away from students or faculty
10. Locate substitute folder or binder
11. If retiring, leave your lesson plans folders, files, binders and teaching
materials in a central location, and leave a note that the new librarian can
discard them without guilt if they are not of interest.
12. List of recertification procedures and opportunities available (school
department, state, conferences, special library project, inservice)
13. List any special collections that should not be weeded even if the
curriculum does not currently support them (state or city history, Newbery,
Memorial donations, etc.)
14. Curriculum areas that need new or additional library materials purchased in
the near future
15. Budget suggestions ( Be sure to leave some money in your budget for the new
librarian to use)
16. Location of special items (envelopes for vertical file, bookmarks, blank
Avery labels, etc.)
17. List of possible financial sources beyond the school department

a. PTA
b. Boosters club
c. Organizations in the community that provide grants
d. Fine money
e. Copier money
f. Money left over at the end of the school year that has not been spent by the
faculty (see the principal)

18. Sources of review journals beyond those the library subscribes to

a. Librarians in the school district
b. Central library coordinator
c. Regional Library District Library
d. Public library

19. Prepare a list of topics or questions the principal might want to discuss
with applicants for the new librarian’s position
20. Leave you telephone # or e-mail address or the dates when you would be
available to meet with the new librarian to answer questions
21. Prepare a list of services you provide to faculty beyond your normal duties
22. Note any blind spots in the library which make supervision difficult
23. Send the new librarian a “surprise” gift or remembrance the first week of
school (plant, flowers, snack, poster, etc.)
24. Don’t refer to the library as “Yours” when speaking to the new librarian.
Encourage the new librarian to do things in a different way, or to move
furniture around. Leave the impression that you eagerly anticipate the
wonderful new changes that will be taking place with the changing of the guard.
New people mean new ideas, with fresh approaches to the daily issues of a
school library setting.
