Hi LM_NETters! Yes, I remember Donna Parker and Trixie Beldon and Cherry
Ames and a host of others. But my favorites were the Frank Baum Oz books! I
didn't see an actual school library until I was in fourth grade. We were in
Florida, (in the sixties, during the Space race) and I had never realized
that he had written any other books than "The Wizard of Oz." That library
had them all. I read until we moved back to Pittsburgh, where no one,
including the librarians, had ever heard of more Oz books. Took 3 years to
find anymore. We got sent to Rochester, New York, where they had another
terrific school library, and the Public Library was just next door. So much
of my childhood is bound up in the books I read. My dad was a civil engineer
and we traveled a lot. Some times there were no other children my age. I
read. I was ten when my mother bribed me to stop sucking my thumb by buying
me a book. When I caught Mono, and then followed it up with Scarlet Fever,
Rheumatic Fever, and another bout of Scarlet Fever, books became my constant
companion. There wasn't much that I didn't read, although I prefered
fiction. All genres of fiction. At the same library in New York, I
discovered Science Fiction. Andre Norton and Robert Heinlein. In high
school, I discovered Tolkien. To this day, when I discover an author that I
enjoy, I will read as many books as possible by that author. In college, I
discovered Christopher Stasheff and "The Warlock in Spite of Himself." All
of these books and more, I regard as old friends. Marcy
