TECH: Mac printing problems

I have two G-3 computers and one LC580 connected by Appletalk to an HP
Deskwriter printer.

The problem is that the computers intermittently "lose" the printer.
Sometimes going to the Chooser will correct it, but not always.
Our tech person advises disconnecting and reconnecting the wiring between
the machines.  This sometimes works, but sometimes does not.

I'd like to know why it happens and what can be done to stop it!  These
are our only computers connected to the internet so students (and me
too!) become very frustrated.  I'd be grateful for any ideas or
suggestions.
