I just received my May issue of Yahoo Internet Life. The theme is College Life Online and there is an interesting article on plagiarizing term papers using the Internet. An interesting statistic listed comes from U.C. Berkeley's Office of Student Conduct. It states in the school newspaper, the Daily Californian, that " from 1993 to 1997 cheating ... has increased 774%". The article explains how students may download term papers or plagiarize other documents on the Internet. They also investigate 3 services who provide software (for a fee) to detect plagiarism. The results were mixed. It is an interesting article for those of us who deal with students doing research on a daily basis. There definately is a need for more anti-plagiarism instruction when teaching research skills. I would post the URL but a visit to the Yahoo Internet Life site (www.yil.com) listed only the articles in the April issue. If you are interested you might try again next month.
