I am planning to attend the school librarian conference in Birmingham, Alabama in November. Being a train fanatic and wanting to see more US countryside, I want to travel by the Sunset Limited from LA to New Orleans. (I thought the rail trip from San Francisco to Seattle in 97 was fantastic) My problem is which direction will be most scenic in daylight hours. Travelling east, it is daylight from Tucson AZ to nearly Alpine TX and again from just after San Antonio TX to nearly New Orleans. I gather this will mean the Rio Grande will be passed in the night. Travelling west, daylight will be from New Orleans to Lake Charles LA and again from San AntonioTX to just after El Paso TX. I am aware Amtrak often runs late so all planning could be futile but would appreciate your advice.
