TECH: Zip files

Dear Group,

Could someone tell me how to make a file into a zip file?  My aunt is wanting
to e-mail my mother quite a large amount of information (genealogy) and she
needs to zip it before she sends it.  Any suggestions?  And then how does my
mom "unzip" it once she receives it on her computer?
