Dear Victoria, I asked someone about acquiring a good book on young adult literature so I could update myself about recent and current literature to use with or order for my middle school students. She had an extra copy of the following book which she gave to me: Donelson, Kenneth L. and Alleen Pace NIlsen. Literature for Today's Young Adults, 5th ed. Longman (imprint of Addison Wesley Longman, Inc.): New York. c. 1997. 486 pages. ISBN 0-673-99737-5 I think it's excellent, but, unfortunately it does not include elementary level books so I'm including other similar books in the series from the same publisher for you to check into. Maybe other librarians or library science students or instructors are familiar with some of them and can give input as to their worth. Sutherland, Zena. Children and Books, 9th ed. c 1997. (this is probably based on the old reliable Arbuthnot anthology of the same title that was used in library school 20 years ago or more when I took "Kiddy Lit".) Russell, David L. Literature for Children; A Short Introduction, 3rd. ed. c. 1997. Nodelman, Perry. The Pleasures of Children's Literature, 2nd ed. c 1996. Rothlein, Liz and Anita Meyer Meinbach. Legacies: Using Children's Literature in the Classroom. c. 1996. Lukens, Rebecca J. and Ruth K. J. Cline. A Critical Handbook of Literature for Young Adults. c. 1995. Rudman, Masha Kabakow. Children's Literature: An Issues Approach, 3rd ed. c. 1995. Lukens, Rebecca J. A Critical Handbook of Children's Literature, 5th ed. c. 1995. "It's got to be the going not the gettin' there that's good." Harry Chapin in song "Take the Greyhound" "But then, you could go both ways!" Scarecrow in movie "The Wizard of Oz" Sandy Pomerantz, Librarian Central East Middle School 236 E.
