I just read an article on page 13 in the August SLJ. Apparently the Weekly Reader has told ALA to cease and desist marketing items in their catalog with the words READ on them. They have had READ as a trademark since 1953 for their magazine. I order a lot of READ materials. Posters, notepaper, bags, pins--you name it. READ isn't a catchy phrase, it is the most fundamental thing that we want not only students to do, but everyone to do! Promoting a love of reading, is at the core of our jobs as librarians, and what we believe in. It makes me furious that this company is trying to stop anyone from promoting reading. I am going to email them and give them my opinion about their letter. Their email is galaxy@weeklyreader.com.
