I "created" a program last year which I would like to share. It is called STAR Start Taking All Responsibility I decorated the circ desk with shiny stars and made a large star for each class. The stars hung from fishing line. On the large class star was the teacher's name and the statement, "We returned all of our library books on time!" The stars hang from the teacher's name pencil (very visible in the hall in front of each room) when the class has returned all of their books. I gave until the following morning as the "grace" period. Absentees did not count against the class. Stars of the classes not returning all of their books were placed in the classroom with a star with unhappy face - "grounded star" Emphasis was placed on finding a safe place for library books at home and taking responsiblity for remembering to bring them back on library day. I kept track of the number of times each class earned their star and at the end of each quarter, the two leading classes came in for special storytime, popcorn and lots of praise and how proud we are of their responsibility- teachers got free time (incentive to remind students!). I will do it again this year, but put the hanging and unhanging of the star on the teacher. It worked best with 1st and 2 nd graders. I may extend it to Kindergarten this year if the teachers will agree to do the keeping track of times all books were returned.
