I don't think that there is a trend in library school to throw out periodicals. I am in library school as we speak and I think that the opposite is true. The stress is meeting the needs of the patron. I cannot speak for a highschool, but I did a survey with my grade 1-5 students this past year. I discovered that in 4th and 5th grades there are a pile of kids who prefer magazines and would rather not read books. As a matter of fact, some of these kids would not read if their only choice was a book. I think that might be a matter of perceived "coolness", but who really knows. Would I rather see a kid pick up a good book? Of course. Would I toss something that is enticing kids to read? No way!
