This is a HIT on library related books for elem. students. Some are ones I received and others I made up. Thanks for the help. 1. I work in a Title 1 school with fairly low levels of achievement, so depending on the level of your students you could adapt this activity. I have done this with 4th-6th graders with the Library Dragon. I chose excerpts from the book that are particularly heavy with metaphorical language and double-spaced these excerpts (1/2 page for 4th graders; 1 full page for 5th and 6th graders). After reading the book to the students I had the students find and circle all the words that had anything to do with fire or dragons...things like incendiary, smoking, knight, draggin', etc. Good way to talk about vocabulary and puns. Susan Penn, Librarian Georgian Hills Elementary Memphis, TN penns01@ten-nash.ten.k12.tn.us 2. How about the Library Dragon on the first day...to stimulate discussion of the library and your expectations, consequences, programs, etc. Library Dragon by Carmen Agra Deedy: I made a larger-than-life dragon out of light green kraft paper, put it up on the buletin board and cut out "scales" from dark green, purple and yellow paper. we read the story early in the year, talked about how important it was to take care of books, then the class turned around and saw the dragon looking at them, I put ticky-tack on the back and my kindergartners put their own scale on to remind them that if they did'nt take good care of their books Mrs. Hancock(me) might turn into a library dragon. The Headline for the BB was "The Library Dragon is watching YOU!" (on scorched brown paper) I Took My Frog to the Library by Eric A. Kimmel Have a bag of stuffed animals and students draw one out and say "I took my _______(whatever they drew out) to the library but ______." I got this idea off LM-NET Library Lil by Suzanne Williams Compare to other tall tales. Make a list of the things libraries and books do for the people in the story.
