Recently there was a letter posted about the article in SLJ giving an address to write to Weekly Reader. When I wrote them for more information, this was their reply. I think it is fair to present all sides whether you agree or disagree. Thanks. Diane In the July 18, 1999 issue of School Library Journal, an article appeared in which the on-going discussions between READ magazine and the ALA's use of the word "READ" were mentioned. Obviously, one of the goals of both the ALA and READ Magazine is to promote reading and improve literacy. READ Magazine applauds and supports the ALA's efforts. The concern was the use of the title, "READ" on an ALA catalog that sold objects such as sports bottles and key chains. Adding to the concern was (1) the fact that the ALA catalog's typeface was similar to READ Magazine's and (2) the use of the trademark designation following the word "READ" on the ALA catalog. The title "READ" has been a registered trademark of READ Magazine since 1953 (Reg. NO. 574,960), READ Magazine feels that the ALA's use of the word "READ" in these circumstances creates a confusion in the marketplace between the two entities. READ Magazine has been a supporter of reading for almost fifty years. We partner with the Center of the Book in the Library of Congress along with state centers in promoting reading through the Letters About Literature contest. We encourage libraries and the vital role they play in assuring a literate society. Our correspondence with the ALA has been a simple matter concerning READ's Magazine's protection of its trademark. Discussions continue towards what we hope will be a mutually satisfactory conclusion.
