Sandra,
Try using Rosemary Sutcliffe's fantastic historical novels. Some of her
books are difficult for 6th graders to read, but make terrific read alouds.
Her character development is excellent and the storytelling is laced with
action and detail. I often recommended these books for adults when I was in
the public library. I can send you a list of titles if you need them. K.M.
Peyton is another British writer with an eye for character development, sense
of the detail mixed with action, and an understanding of the relationships
between the aristocracy and the common man.

There is a book I liked, THE HOUSE ON HOUND HILL, it is about time travel,
ghosts, and the plaque in London, Maggie Prince
