I mailed Peter a few weeks ago and suggested that those of us who know how to automatically delete messages post directions regularly for the various different mail readers. He agreed, and here's the first installment. For those not familiar with the message rules feature, the messages you identify as unwanted get dumped into your deleted folder (or some similar place electronically) before they even show up in your message folder. Why would you want to do this? Suppose you are not interested in the requests for greetings. You can tell Outlook Express to automatically delete everything with the word GREET in the subject. I'm posting directions for Outlook Express 5.0 and will do so every few days through September for the new members and those who are logging back on. I think this could be incorporated into the FAQ file. Those of you using other mail readers, feel free to post your own directions. ================================= Killing Messages Using Microsoft Outlook Express 5.0 1. Click on a message of the type you do not want to appear in your inbox. For example, you might not be interested in the technology messages, so click on one of those that have TECH: in the subject line. 2. From the menu, select Tools 3. Select Message Rules 4. Select Mail 5. Select New for a new rule. Choose your conditions and actions. Click on the condition you would like to meet, then click on the desired action, then click on the highlighted option in section 3. Add the identifying feature of whatever it is you're looking to get rid of, and save. If you spend some time looking through the menus on these directions, you'll notice that you can automatically move, copy, forward and otherwise manipulate your messages in many ways. Experiment until you find what works for you. Also, look at the blocked senders feature. If you get a message from someone you never want to hear from again, make sure your cursor is on the message in the message list, then select 1. Message 2. Block Sender This removes their messages from your inbox each and every time they mail something to you. You can always unblock them, but it's a great way to get rid of the sex spammers or someone trying to sell you something.
